Over the last 17 years I have done property and real estate photography in every suburb of Durban and surrounds, from townships to townhouses, ‘Toti to Stanger and as far inland as Drummond. I’ve said it before and I will say it again; Cowie’s Hill has the most beautiful homes in Durban.

Whenever I get a commission to shoot a home in Cowie’s Hill I just know it is going to be something special. Now I live in the suburb and I find myself photographing homes in the area nearly every week. Nothing’s changed. They are still my favourites to shoot. Why?

Character.

You can spend millions of Rands on a mansion in the more affluent suburbs of Durban, especially to the north, but you just don’t find the kind of character that you get in Cowie’s Hill. The homes here seem to have a unique ability to settle your mind. Maybe it’s the setting? Maybe it’s the design? They all seem to have that intangible quality (the French call it je ne sais quoi) that sets them apart from the rest.

We recently did a shoot just around the corner from where I live now and once again I was blown away with a great sense of architectural order and harnessing of energy. This home is situated on a (mostly) level plot and has been designed in such a way that everything is laid out with flow in mind, but not to the point where you can see everything from everywhere. The kitchen is not open plan, but it’s just a few steps away from the open plan dining and living rooms. Your bedrooms are off along a passage with the master opening up to the pool, which is situated between the living room and a really nicely finished outdoor bar. Outside the living room you have a braai area on the opposite side of the outdoor bar. It’s all contained and offers exceptional flow between rooms. Feng Shui experts would be right at home here.
